Artistic Elements (New tour!)September 30, 2009–June 18, 2010 Grades K–1: 90-minute program (tour + art workshop) Tour: Learn about the elements of art—line, shape, color and texture—while exploring art from around the world in SAM’s permanent collection. Students learn how artists use these elements to communicate with the viewer. Art Workshop: Students design a mixed-media accordion book using the elements of art as a source of inspiration. September 30, 2009–June 18, 2010 Grades K–1: 90-minute program (tour + art workshop) Tour: Visit the museum and explore the unique ways that art teaches us about the values and customs that families share. Traditions reflected in selected works of art include family portraits, celebrations, gift giving and storytelling. Art Workshop: Students create a scroll inspired by their own family traditions, including favorite foods and family celebrations, using realistic images, symbols, stamps and text. Related Resources
September 30, 2009–June 18, 2010 Grades 2–8: 2-hour program (tour + art workshop) Tour: Study the history, stories and living traditions of Native Americans of the Northwest Coast through a rich collection of masks, carvings and woven treasures. Special emphasis is placed on Native American art as part of a continuing culture in our region. Related Resources
September 30, 2009–June 18, 2010 Grades 3–12: 2-hour program (tour + art workshop) Tour: Experience the energy and beauty of SAM’s African art collection, including figurative sculpture, masks and masquerades, and the art of everyday life. Art Workshop: Students design a mixed-media mask inspired by designs found in the African art collection. Related Resources
September 30, 2009–June 18, 2010 Grades 9–12: 90-minute tour only. No art workshop. Tour: This tour is a literary exploration of SAM’s collection designed for high school students. Students interested in narrative, story, poetry and text in art participate in guided looking, with time to reflect through writing and sketching. Related Resources
