In this tour, students will discover how Japanese artists tell stories with pictures, learn about the various materials and techniques used in Japanese Art, and experience Japanese aesthetics through viewing art in the Seattle Asian Art Museum’s permanent collection in the exhibition Japanese Art Legends, Tales, Poetry: Visual Narrative in Japanese Art. Art Workshop: A long time ago, in what is now known as the Edo period in Japan, friends would gather and share their brush painting and poetry as an entertaining pastime. One artist would present his poem, typically a Haiku, to a friend and that person would create a brush painting to go with the painting. In this workshop, students will work in small groups to create a haiku poem, Sumi brush painting and decorate a border with Japanese paper. Together they will undertake the group creation of a harmonious piece of artwork. |
