AN AUSTRALIAN SAM REMIX, FRIDAY June 1, 8 PM – MIDNIGHT

Experience an evening celebrating Ancestral Modern: Australian Aboriginal Art and Theaster Gates: The Listening Room – full of music, dance and performance.

SEATTLE, May 21, 2012 – SAM Remix celebrates the opening weekend of Ancestral Modern: Australian Aboriginal Art from the Kaplan & Levi Collection along with the last month of Theaster Gates: The Listening Room, with a late night party on June 1. The entire museum will be alive with the musical styling of DJ J-Justice, storytelling, records, and My Favorite Things: Highly Opinionated Tours by local artists, curators and more. Remix takes place from 8 pm to midnight at the Seattle Art Museum at 1300 First Avenue.

The night starts with DJ J-Justice spinning global beats, hip hop, soul and more to keep you movin’ all night long. Two of Seattle’s greatest performance writers go head-to-head with two actors in three rounds of competition we’re calling Storytelling Spoken Word Slam at 8:45, 9:30 and 10:15 pm. The Record Store is back with Listening Parties, special guests, listening stations and hands-on activities. And in the Listening Room Gallery with Theaster Gates’ installation, a DJ will be spinning beats from the Dr. Wax record collection as a volunteer archivist records and catalogs the mixes. Seattle Phonographers Union will be remixing ambient sounds collected throughout the museum into a live soundscape in the Native American and Aboriginal Galleries while cellist Paul Rucker creates Sonic Interpretations live in the Ancestral Modern Galleries at 9:15 and 10:30 pm. The ever-popular My Favorite Things: Highly Opinionated Tours will be lead by Brenda Croft, Australian artist and curator at the University of South Australia; Seattle-based artists Amanda Manitach, John Feodorov and Matika Wilbur; and The Librarians of the Art Lending Library, among others.
