First Friday Focus: Carrie Dedon

Feb 7 2020

Seattle Art Museum

Plestcheeff Auditorium

11 AM – NOON

First Friday Focus is a free midday program featuring curators, artists, scholars, and creative minds behind SAM’s exhibitions. On the first Friday of every month (November-May), hear from a SAM curator or special guest and get an in-depth look at art and ideas related to SAM’s exhibitions and collection. After the program, visit the galleries with a fresh perspective and deeper understanding of the art and artists on view.

This month's First Friday Focus features Carrie Dedon, Assistant Curator of Modern & Contemporary Art, as she discusses SAM's current exhibition Danny Lyon.

Danny Lyon’s documentary photography is defined by an empathetic and intimate vision that revolutionized practices in photojournalism in the 1960s. Immersing himself fully within the lives and cultures of his subjects, Lyon’s work offers a personal intimacy, an insider’s view, and a deep sense of understanding of communities that are often outside of the mainstream—from 1960s counterculture groups, to groups and individuals striving for social change.
