Imogen Cunningham (1883â1976) was one of the most well-known photographers from the Northwest. Working at a time when women photographers were few, Cunningham dedicated her life to her art. Drawn entirely from the Seattle Art Museumâs permanent collection, this exhibition of 60 photographs from 1915 to 1973 reveal Cunninghamâs inquisitive eyeâfrom portraits of Frida Kahlo, Alfred Stieglitz and other well-known artists of her time to portraits of her husband on Mt. Rainier, considered some of the first known photographs to be published of a male nude taken by a female photographer (in 1916) and much more. Spanning the artistâs career, the photographs on view demonstrate the breadth and range of Cunninghamâs artistic vision and showcase one of the strengths of SAMâs photography collection.
