Students are immersed in the dynamic interactions between art and nature. Through inquiry-based discussions and activities, students explore contemporary art, observe native plant life, and discover the ways artists are inspired by their environment.

Explore the basic elements of art—such as line, shape, color, and texture—while looking at global art from SAM’s collection! Both independently and together, students learn how artists use these elements to communicate narratives, opinions, and lessons with viewers.

Art has the power to elicit empathy! Students develop close-looking skills that can be applied to recognizing, labeling, and describing emotions while engaging with artworks from varying times, cultures, and artists.

Explore the culturally diverse ways art teaches us about the values and customs that families share. Customs reflected in selected works of art include family portraits, celebrations and ceremonies, gift giving, and storytelling.

What choices are part of an artist’s process? Students will investigate and critique works of art from different artists that vary in era, culture, material, and scale. Contextual information provided on the tour will enrich dialogue and deepen students’ connections. Students will reflect on how these techniques and concepts can apply to their art making.

Students engage with sculptures, garments, and a variety of other mediums connecting them to the stories, traditions, and people of Asia. Students will be encouraged to draw personal connections through hands-on activities, close looking, and collaboration.
