Conversations with Curators | The Alluring Wit of Saul Steinberg
Thu Jan 15 2026
These recent paintings are the result of a decision I made in 2121 to move my painting practice outside. At that time I came upon a section of Thornton Creek, which is relatively seldom visited. This part of the creek is in a deep ravine surrounded by a fairly typical Seattle neighborhood. It felt wild yet safe to me, public yet private. During the past two years or so I have spent a good deal of time there witnessing seasonal changes and the effects of various pressures on the landscape. These include torrential rains, extended dry periods, invasive plant incursions, limb and tree fall, log jams, erosion of the creek bed and the effects of direct human use and intervention. By painting directly and frequently from observation in this location which extends to about 100 yards on the north side of the creek, I hope to convey a sense of the place in all its beauty and distress.
