On SAM Body + Mind Saturday evenings, enjoy performances featuring local and visiting storytellers, poets, and creative organizations.
Inside proudly presents a curated poetry show, an evening where words create a sanctuary for the soul. Rooted in their steadfast belief in the power of self-expression, Inside invites you to partake in an event that mirrors their mission of fostering self-discovery and healing.
The headlining poet of the evening is Bay Davis, a South Central native rooted in her colorful upbringing, is undeniably called to liberation, abolition, and love. She draws from her experience as an Afro-Indigenous black trans woman navigating communities saturated in gang culture, police violence, transphobia, and all the âismsâ. From organizing on street corners to classrooms and slam poetry stages, Bay explores communal disparities, structural racism, grief, gender identity, sexuality, and our sometimes the interpersonal relationship to them all through the lens of her own intimate survival and ancestrally informed wordsmanship.
She is a 2017 National Poetry Slam finalist and internationally recognized trans advocate and organizer. Her work has been featured in the LA and NY Times, Bese, Netflix, Mitu, OUT Magazine, and many other print and digital platforms. Bay utilizes her work to weave the tools of her own survival as offerings to challenge, heal, and question the systems and climate we exist in today.
