Tobey or Not Tobey: Exploring Mark Tobey’s Painting Materials at the Seattle Art Museum
Nicholas Dorman | SAM Jane Lang Davis Chief Conservator
Discover the ongoing investigations into American artist Mark Tobey’s materials, methods, and tools with Nicholas Dorman. SAM has extraordinary artworks by Mark Tobey in its collection, including the monumental John R. Baillargeon House Murals, 1939–1940, completed paintings, sketches, painting fragments, and various mediums Tobey used in the creation of his art. Dorman will explain how the recent reexamination and conservation of Tobey’s work, made possible through new scientific equipment purchased with a generous grant from the Friday Foundation, paired with archival research and sustained collaboration with conservation scientists at Portland State University, is leading to a deeper understanding of Tobey’s creative process.
