Coronation, 2020

Video (1 hour, 53 minutes)

Coronation portrays China’s state machinery in action during crisis management, focusing on the suffering of individuals due to the severe social-control measures taken during lockdown in Wuhan, the epicenter of the global COVID-19 pandemic. Functioning as his eyes and ears on the ground, a crew hired by Ai filmed covertly, with contributions from volunteers. In Europe during the pandemic, Ai remotely mobilized these amateur cinematographers. China’s tight controls undoubtedly flattened the curve of its casualty count but had their own terrible costs. From safety pep rallies to individual tragedies, the personal experiences recorded here are poignant and enlightening.
