Fall Educator Workshop: Read-a-Rama

Nov 2 2024

10:30 am–12:30 pm

Seattle Art Museum

Simons Board Room

Join Dr. Miranda Belarde-Lewis (Zuni/Tlingit), Dr. Michelle H. Martin, and SAM Educators for an interactive professional development workshop focused on getting students excited about Native art and reading! Read-a-Rama uses children's and young adult literature paired with music, movement, and hands-on activities to improve literacy while also encouraging social-emotional growth.

Facilitators will highlight Native artworks and share how to use artwork and books as a springboard for hands-on activities that build cultural competence and cultural humility in students from all backgrounds. Every participant will choose a free book to take home. This workshop includes resources and Washington State Clock Hours. K–12 educators, paraeducators, subject area coaches, and administrators are welcome.

Free with registration required.

Support for K-12 programs during the 2024-2025 school year is provided by the BNSF Railway Foundation, Foster Foundation, and Freeman Foundation. Partial, sustained support for SAM’s K-12 programs is provided by an endowment established in 1999 by a National Endowment for the Humanities challenge grant and the generous contributions of matching donors, including the Ann P. Wyckoff Education Endowment. The William Randolph Hearst Endowed Fund for Education Programs at the Seattle Art Museum has supported SAM K–12 programs since 1994.

Educator Workshops

Educator Workshops provide teachers with rich opportunities to relate the arts directly to lived experiences. SAM’s virtual and on-site professional development workshops offer K–12 educators and administrators techniques and ideas for integrating popular culture, art, and cultural objects into classroom learning.
