Join us as we celebrate SAM’s 30th anniversary of Dia de los Muertos! Witness the incredible tapete installation by Oaxacan artist Fulgencio Lazo and a team of local artists. Immerse yourself in the vibrant energy of this holiday, experiencing art, traditions, music, dance, and delicious food, and engage in hands-on activities that inspire creativity and learning. This celebration invites us to embrace life and accept death as a natural part of our journey. Don’t miss the chance to see the tapete in the Brotman Forum until November 11.

Event Highlights

Unique tapete (Sand Painting) by Fulgencio Lazo, 6–9:30 pm

Discover this year's tapete created by the talented Fulgencio Lazo and his team. This intricate work of art reflects the spirit and essence of Dia de los Muertos, showcasing the beauty of life and the acceptance of death as a natural part of it.

Musical performances by La Banda Gozona featuring dances by Grupo Cultural Oaxaqueño, 6–7:15 pm

La Banda Gonzona’s soul-stirring music will infuse the celebration with the spirit of Dia de los Muertos, creating an immersive experience for everyone! Dancers from Grupo Cultural Oaxaqueño will bring a colorful and energetic performance that will have you dancing all night long.

Poetry reading by Mateo Acuña, 7:15 pm

from his chapbook Dear Spanish on the languages of identity, heritage and belonging. Mateo Acuña is a Peruvian-American Kichwa poet, writer & activist. In 2023-2024, he was the Seattle Youth Poet Laureate and currently serves as the Auburn Poet Laureate.

Salsa Music by Buena Vibra, 7:30–9:30 pm

Get ready to dance with the lively salsa rhythms of Buena Vibra. Their infectious energy will keep you dancing throughout the evening!

Art Activities, 6–9 pm

Get your creative juices flowing with engaging art-making activities suitable for all ages. Hailing from Oaxaca, Mexico, join printmakers Edith Chávez and Ivan Bautista, from Taller Burro Press to explore the art of printmaking and print an original design inspired by the 30th anniversary celebration. Additionally, SAM’s Teen Arts Group (TAG) will also lead a paper flower-making workshop, where participants can craft flowers to honor the spirit of Dia de los Muertos.

30th Anniversary Commemorative Posters

Oaxacan artist Edgar Martinez will be live printing Dia de los Muertos Commemorative Posters, that will feature a commissioned illustration by Shinzaburo Takeda.

Gallery Access 6–9 pm

The 3rd floor galleries will remain open during this event. Enjoy a serene moment during the event while visiting the art on view.

Esta celebración nos invita a abrazar la vida y aceptar la muerte como una parte natural de nuestro viaje. No pierdas la oportunidad de ver el tapete en el Brotman Forum hasta el 11 de noviembre.

Tapete Único (Pintura de Arena) por Fulgencio Lazo, 6–9:30 pm

Descubre el tapete de este año creado por el talentoso Fulgencio Lazo y su equipo. Esta intrincada obra de arte refleja el espíritu y la esencia del Día de los Muertos, mostrando la belleza de la vida y la aceptación de la muerte como una parte natural de ella.

Presentación musical por Banda Gozona con bailes del Grupo Cultural Oaxaqueño, 6–7:15 pm

La música conmovedora de La Banda Gonzona infundirá la celebración con el espíritu del Día de los Muertos, creando una experiencia remarcable para todos. Bailarines del Grupo Cultural Oaxaqueño traerán una actuación colorida y enérgica.

Lectura de poesía por Mateo Acuña, 7:15 pm

De su chapbook Dear Spanish sobre los lenguajes de identidad, herencia, y pertenencia. Mateo Acuña es un poeta, escritor y activista peruano-estadounidense Kichwa. En 2023-2024, fue el Poeta Joven Laureado de Seattle y actualmente se desempeña como el Poeta Laureado de Auburn.

Musica Salsa de Buena Vibra, 7:30–9:30 pm

Prepárate para bailar con los ritmos de salsa de Buena Vibra. ¡Su energía contagiosa te mantendrá bailando durante toda la noche!

Actividades de arte, 6–9 pm

Deja fluir tu creatividad con actividades de arte para todas las edades. Originarios de Oaxaca, México, únete a los grabadores Edith Chávez e Ivan Bautista, de Taller Burro Press, para explorar el arte del grabado e imprimir un diseño original inspirado en la celebración del 30 aniversario. Además, el SAM’s Teen Arts Group (TAG) también dirigirá un taller de fabricación de flores de papel, donde los participantes podrán crear sus propias flores para honrar el espíritu del Día de los Muertos.

Carteles Conmemorativos del 30° Aniversario

El artista oaxaqueño Edgar Martínez estará imprimiendo en vivo carteles conmemorativos del Día de los Muertos, que contarán con una ilustración comisionada de Shinzaburo Takeda.

Acceso a las Galerías, 6–9pm

Las galerías del tercer piso permanecerán abiertas durante este evento. Disfruta de un momento sereno durante el evento mientras visitas las obras de arte en exhibición.
